Schluter Systems - Stop or Prevent Water Damage
There are many things that you can do to get rid of water damage in your home, including having flooring membranes installed that will repel water that gets spilled; for instance, Schluter makes all of the KERDI and DITRA accessories that people often use in their bathrooms. You need to use as many different tactics as you can to stop water damage, which can lead to rot and very expensive repair jobs. Once the rafters or the walls start rotting, you could have to tear them apart in order to replace them. Keeping this from happening also costs money, but it saves you all of the time and hassle of such a large job.
For starters, have someone come over and look at your room. Make sure that your shingles are in good condition. They can often come off during the winter, with all of the snow and ice, or during a windstorm. Once a shingle is gone, rainwater can get a foothold. You may never see the damage if you do not go up into your attic, but that does not mean it isn't there. Every five years or so, you should have a professional see if your roof needs to be repaired or replaced.
Another thing that you can do is to get a bottle of liquid sealant. Go along next to your windows and doors and seal up the cracks. Liquid sprays work best because they cover the cracks completely and then dry into a hard, impenetrable surface.
